Ivan’s Hermitage

In Teplice nad Metují, you’ll find a less-than-obvious, yet significant, building: Ivan’s Hermitage with the pilgrimage Church of the Holy Virgin Mary. The church is interesting in that its floor plan is shaped like the letter ‘U’ and it includes a Garden of Eden.

Baroque hermitage

This Baroque hermitage was built from 1753-1754 by the Prague physician and doctor of philosophy, Jan Maxmilián of Peytersberg. When he was already 65 years old, Jan decided to become a hermit, living in this spot with two other hermits for many years. After his death, Joseph II disbanded the congregation, the pilgrimage church, and the hermitage. However, the sacristans received an exception from the emperor and lived here until halfway through the 20th century. The history of the hermitage is quite secretive and mysterious. Rumours say a secret underground corridor goes from beneath the hermitage to Bischofstein. Today, the hermitage is undergoing repairs, and tours are held here. If you come visit in the summer, you can also look forward to the organ concerts.
